Board Report August 2025
Types of Crisis Situations
Lockdown : A “lockdown” announcement will be made when there is an active threat in the building and Law Enforcement personnel need to be notified. This type of threat will require all personnel to immediately make a determination of whether to shelter in place/barricade or evacuate the building. Secure : A “secure” is announced when there is a situation outside the building that is not designated as an immediate threat to PTHS. This type of crisis requires all exterior doors to be locked, increase situational awareness, and continue teaching. Once the situation is under control, there will be an “all clear” announcement. Hold : “Hold” is announced when there is a situation in the school which requires medical or other attention. It may also require the notification of Law Enforcement personnel, the Fire Department or Ambulance Personnel. This type of crisis requires designated individuals to complete their assigned responsibilities (securing doors, shutting off utility mains, etc.). “Hold” situations require all personnel to secure the area they are in, along with keeping any students in that area. You are to secure the door and continue teaching your respective lesson. Do not let students leave the room. Once the situation is under control, there will be an “all clear” announcement. Fire : The fire alarm is a constant blast on the fire alarm and strobe lights. If the alarm fails, the regular class bells will ring constantly. The fire alarm should be sounded by anyone who has seen a fire in the building or has seen smoke coming out of a room or from under a door. If smoke is seen coming from under a door, do not open the door. To activate the alarm, pull the lever arm on the red fire alarms located on the walls. When the
alarm is heard, the teacher should do the following: ● Check the surroundings (including the hallway) ● Listen for an announcement from the Office ● If required, allow the students to evacuate the building immediately ● Muster at the designated area and take attendance
Bomb Threat : Bomb threats may be handled several different ways depending on the circumstances, so there are no strict guidelines in place for evacuation, however the following will apply in most situations: Students are to be evacuated from the building (not dismissed from school). Evacuation orders will be given over the intercom system. Students may be instructed to go to their lockers and put on coats and warm clothing if the weather is cold. Students dressed for P.E. may put on clothing over their gym suits before leaving the building. Upon leaving the building, students are to remain in class groups. Stay with your class and maintain order.
