Construction and Renovation The District undergoes a ten-year decennial health life safety survey and annually updates a five year maintenance plan and performs maintenance and inspections/testing of all District buildings, grounds, and systems to provide a safe environment for school and community activities. Work is performed on a day-to-day basis by District staff or through outside contractors. All properties are periodically assessed for value. If vandalism occurs, the District works with the court system to seek compensation. Work includes new construction; renovation and maintenance of existing facilities; survey and removal of underground tanks and testing buildings, air and water for asbestos, radon, lead, and other purposes; AHERA, ADA, and other compliance activities; playground and equipment inspection and repairs; and concrete and asphalt repairs and coating among other things. Vehicles The District maintains and insures a vehicle fleet and contracts with qualified mechanics from reputable local garages to perform regular maintenance on all autos and trucks including an annual general safety inspection and the replacement of worn parts on an as needed basis. Driver Education teachers are responsible for the safety and training of students including inspection of the vehicles before and during immediate use. Snow Removal In addition to personnel costs, the District maintains equipment and supplies specifically for spill and snow removal to reduce or eliminate unsafe conditions. Life Safety The Regional Office of Education (ROE) annually inspects each building housing students to ensure that fire and life safety statues are followed. Findings are immediately addressed by the District. Facilities are also inspected for asbestos and public health issues by various third parties. The District contracts with licensed architects to perform ten-year life safety surveys as required by law. Findings are drawn up in the form of life safety amendments to go through a formal legal process of approval and adoption involving the District, the Regional Office of Education, and the State Board of Education. Once amendments are approved and filed with the County Clerk, the District can include the cost of the work in a life safety tax levy. Bleachers, Pools and Stadium The District contracts with licensed architects to annually inspect the structural integrity and condition of all gyms, pools, bleachers, stadiums and the related structural supports. Findings are incorporated into the District’s maintenance plan for repair by either maintenance staff or outside contractors as appropriate. Alarms and Safety Equipment The District maintains various alarm and safety equipment, including technology and software to reduce accidents, theft and other loss. This includes fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems. Additionally, the District contracts with a qualified
