Emergency Care Plan for Classroom Instructors 1. The instructor will make a decision based upon a quick, comprehensive examination of the injured or ill student to determine whether first-aid is needed or if the situation is severe/life threatening. 2. If the injury is severe and it is necessary to begin life-saving measures: a. Remain with the student and send a responsible student to notify the Health Center and request the assistance of the Nurse or her designee b. Send a responsible student to notify the school administration c. Classroom teachers should follow up by thoroughly completing the school accident form which is submitted to the school administration. 3. If the decision is made to call the Rescue Squad/911: a. Remain with the student until help arrives b. Send a responsible student to alert the school administration, who will notify the parents/guardians 5. The following information should be obtained while waiting for the Nurse or her designee: a. Obtain a history of the injury by questioning the student. In case the student is unconscious, obtain the information from someone who witnessed the injury b. Time and place of injury c. Exact cause of the injury d. Type of pain--sharp, dull, aching, throbbing e. Sounds--did the student hear or feel anything rip, tear, snap, pop or give away f. Has the student ever had an injury like this before g. Medication--is the student taking any medication or have there been any changes in their medication 6. If the situation requires general first-aid treatment a. Send a responsible student to the Health Center to request the assistance of the Nurse or her designee, or the student may go directly to the Health Center if they are able b. In any other case, remain with the student 4. Be sure to inform 911 which door the ambulance should go to—please see school map.

7. Follow-up on the injury by talking with the student or calling the parents.
