Responsibilities of Crisis Management Team Members I. Following threats, gestures, or attempts by students, the counselor involved with the case will: A. Evaluate the student(s) to assess the degree of risk and provide immediate intervention as needed: B. Notify parents and provide information about mental health resource professionals; and C. Discuss interventions and monitoring techniques for the student(s) with the principal, as deemed appropriate.

II. Following a completed suicide or death of a student or staff member: A. The Superintendent will:

1. Prepare a statement for the press and handle all media contact; 2. Establish with the district school board a list of appropriate memorials to share with the family of the deceased who request such information; and 3. Make available the use of the principal’s office as the CMT headquarters.

B. The Principal will:

1. Verify what happened; 2. Contain information to protect the privacy of the family; 3. Contact the family of the deceased student or staff member to offer aid; 4. Be available to parents regarding questions; 5. Arrange a staff meeting to relate factual information; 6. Prepare a statement for the media and a statement to be read by classroom teachers (in conjunction with the superintendent and CMT members);

7. Assist the CMT in the development of planned interventions; 8. Assist the CMT in addressing student/staff/parent concerns;

9. Relate proper procedures for students and staff to request attendance at the funeral; and 10. Direct all memorial inquiries in the name of the deceased student or staff member to the family of the deceased.

C. The Director of Guidance will:

1. Assist the principal in developing prepared statements; 2. Convene a meeting of the CMT to assess the situation and plan interventions; 3. Determine whether there is a sufficient number of staff members to deal with the situation, or if additional mental health professionals are needed; 4. Apprise teachers of the situation, warning signs of which to be aware, and mental health professionals/services available to students and staff; 5. Maintain an updated list of agencies and persons available to assist the CMT. 6. Assign an appropriate team member, plus a backup, to maintain a log of events and actions during the crisis to ensure that there will be an accurate written record that can be reviewed once things have calmed down; and 7. Conduct post-crisis assessment follow-up.
