Building Security and Safety

Building Security 1. Doors should be locked when you leave a room unless it is to be used the next period. While class is in session, doors shall be locked. 2. Windows shall be closed and locked by the last teacher in the room. Please assume that you are the last person in the room if you are in doubt. 3. When you leave the building, please stop to see that the door is locked after you go out. Some door closers drag and we cannot assume that any door will automatically lock itself each time. At no time are students to be in the building unsupervised. 4. Never should convenience jeopardize building security. School Safety: Teacher Liabilities 1. Teachers are always in the possible situation of having a suit filed for negligence as the result of accidents at school. In such instances, teachers are forced to show their actions were based upon sound principles and good judgment. Extreme care and close supervision must be exercised in those areas where accidents most often occur. Such areas are the gymnasium, cafeteria, field trips, shops, laboratories, driver training vehicles, and pool. 2. Teachers have no escape from liability except when they exercise good judgment and organization and when they plan their activities intelligently and thoroughly. This is as it should be because teachers have the same responsibilities as parents. Parents, by law, cannot sign away or default their obligations in these same matters. 3. The primary responsibility of any school person is to care for the safety of the students and in case of accident render emergency treatment until professional aid can be secured. 4. Errands--A teacher is never to send a student on a personal errand or give a student permission to leave the school grounds. If a student must leave on school business, permission must be obtained from the administration.

Reporting Student Accidents Teachers should immediately fill out a student accident report form after a student has been injured. Student Accident forms can be obtained in the Main Office or the LACC Office.
