PTHS Student Handbook 2026-2027

A student who is unable to attend school because of pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions, the fulfillment of parenting obligations related to the health of the child, or health and safety concerns arising from domestic or sexual violence will be provided home instruction under the following circumstances: 1. ​ Before the birth of the child when the student’s physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse indicates, in writing, that she is medically unable to attend regular classroom instruction. 2. ​ For up to three months after the child’s birth or a miscarriage. 3. ​ When a student must care for his or her ill child if: a. ​ The child's physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse informs the school, in writing, that the child has a serious health condition that would require the student to be absent from school for two or more consecutive weeks; and b. ​ The student or the student's parent/guardian informs the school, in writing, that the student needs to care for the child during this period. 4. ​ The student must treat physical or mental health complications or address safety concerns arising from domestic or sexual violence when a health care provider or an employee of the student's domestic or sexual violence organization informs the school in writing that the care is needed by the student and will cause the student's absence from school for two or more consecutive weeks. Periodic conferences will be held between appropriate school personnel, parent(s)/guardian(s), and hospital staff to coordinate course work and facilitate a student’s return to school. ●​ In order to assist the Mental Health Team (MHT) in providing timely information to the student’s teachers, the parent/guardian is encouraged to contact a member of the MHT regarding their child’s extended absences due to chronic illness, hospitalizations, juvenile detention, or any other reason resulting in homebound instruction. ●​ Upon the parent and/or facility notifying the MHT of a hospitalization, juvenile detention, or other reason for home instruction, a member of the MHT will reach out to the parent/guardian to provide resources and support, answer questions regarding the reintegration process, and establish a point of contact upon the student’s return to school. ●​ The MHT member will communicate with administration, school counselors, and the student’s teachers to develop a plan of support and to ensure that teachers are aware that they should receive a reintegration plan prior to the student returning to classes. Reintegration to School from Home/Hospital Instruction: ●​ Upon release from home or hospital instruction, the parent/guardian will reach out to the school-based point of contact, designated through the initial phone conversation, to establish a re-entry date. ●​ The student may not return to classes without setting up a reintegration plan with the MHT member, student, and/or parent/guardian. ●​ The designated MHT member will provide information regarding the student’s return date and the reintegration plan to the student’s teachers prior to their established return date. ●​ The MHT member will review the reintegration plan after a maximum of two weeks of implementation with the parent/guardian and student given teacher feedback. The purpose of the review will be to determine the need for adjustments and/or continuation of the plan. The school may reassess home instruction provided to a student under No. 3 or No. 4 every two months to determine the student's continuing need for home instruction.
