PTHS Curriculum Guide 2024-2025
SCIENCE
GENERAL SCIENCE (610, 611) Class Level: 9 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Freshman Placement
General Science builds upon the concepts of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science introduced in previous classes. Students will expand their knowledge while encountering both new and more advanced materials. Throughout the school year, we will explore and illustrate the relationships between various science disciplines and make connections to non-science professions. This course will have a quantitative and project-based focus. Students will have opportunities to grow socially and emotionally. This laboratory course dedicates at least 40 percent of class time to student-centered laboratory activities and field studies. Additionally, 30 percent of the students' time will be devoted to small-group activities focused on team projects and research. The curriculum follows a spiral approach, connecting common concepts that align with both state and national standards.
BIOLOGY (600, 601) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Freshman Placement, C or better in General Science
This course is designed to survey the many fields of life sciences. Some specific areas studied are protein synthesis, genetics, evolution, biochemistry, metabolism, and ecology. The physical adaptations and life functions of bacteria, animals, plants, and fungi form an important part of the course. Students are engaged in inquiry learning through modeling, experimentation, and observation in the laboratory.
BIOLOGY (AP) (606, 607) Class Level: 11, 12 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: A āCā in Biology and Chemistry is recommended
This course follows the College Board AP Biology Framework which includes incorporating Science Practices in a series of laboratory experiments and the content from the 4 Big Ideas of Evolution, Energetics, Information Storage and Transmission, and System Interactions. The pace is fast and the scope of the course is broad. One of the goals is that all students taking the course will be prepared to successfully complete the AP Biology exam and earn credit at many colleges and universities.
