APPLIED ENGLISH (762, 763) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None Applied English is a course designed to improve the student's performance in written communication using activities and curriculum that focus on basic grammar, sentence structure, spelling and proofreading skills. In addition, the course places an emphasis on the SRA Reasoning and Writing Curriculum, plot development, poetry and theme writing. It is designed to build vocabulary and comprehensive skills by exploring a variety of literature. READING ESSENTIALS (770-771) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None Reading Essentials is a course designed to provide students with a variety of activities in reading instruction. This goal is to help students increase their current reading level. Direct instruction of content is provided and all instruction is individualized based on placement assessments. Emphasis is on reading decoding, fluency, and understanding. The course utilizes SRA Decoding levels A- C and Literacy Strategies. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None Transitional English is a course that meets an English requirement for the student with an IEP. The class is generally taken at the same time as English I to enhance the probability of success through pre-teaching, re-teaching, and the use of research-based curricula. The class focuses upon improving student performance in reading comprehension, writing skills, oral communication, and computer-based programs. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Prerequisite: None Applied Math is a course that focuses on foundational math skills and is individualized based on students' needs and placement test results. The course is taught in a direct instruction format with systematic and explicit hands-on learning. Key concepts that are addressed are elapsed time, using currency, solving 1-2 step story problems, life skills math with billing and budgeting, computing basic operation problems ranging from one-digit by one-digit problems to two-digit by three-digit problems. Before advancing to Transitional Math, students should understand basic operation facts (multi-digit adding and subtracting with regrouping/borrowing), multiplying single or double-digit to triple-digit, and long-division with a single divisor. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TRANSITIONAL MATH (768, 769) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None This course provides students with a direct instruction approach to learning essential pre-algebra content using a program called “Essentials for Algebra.” The class focus is to provide a solid foundation as students prepare for Algebra 1, however it takes two years to complete. Essentials for Algebra has several components that benefit student success. During a period, students will focus on several topics by rotation. Students will work on four or five topics each day, some which will be review and some of which will be new. Skills for this class are organized in tracks. A track is organized development of a particular topic. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ APPLIED MATH (766, 767) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 TRANSITIONAL ENGLISH (764, 765) Class Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

APPLIED CIVICS (778) Class Level: 10, 11, 12

Credit: 1/2 Prerequisite: None Applied Civics is a course designed to meet the state graduation requirement. The course takes an in-depth view of the U.S. Constitution and all of the amendments. In addition, students learn the roles, responsibilities, and terms of the 3 major branches of government. Students are given a modified U.S. Constitution test and must pass it, along with other requirements, to successfully pass the course. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
