coverage including general liability, flood, crime, earthquake, general property, mobile equipment, inland marine, auto, blanket liability, pollution, cybercrime, and excess liability.
A primary focus of the District is on safety and prevention of accidents. To that end, the District provides adequate supervision, maintains the properties, attends workshops and trainings, and uses safety assessment services and materials provided by insurance carriers and their professional risk management staff. For instance, all school classrooms, labs, shops and playgrounds receive safety inspections and the District receives safety assessments and advice to help it specify safety features and purchase appropriate items. The District removes equipment deemed unsafe by risk management experts from the insurance company. The level of coverage depends on the type of liability. For specific details, refer to the District’s insurance policies maintained and updated annually based on the District’s claims history and changes to its assets. In conjunction with its liability coverage and carrier, the District maintains an extensive “Property Inventory and Cost Record Report” in cooperation with th e Industrial Appraisal Company. Whenever a claim is warranted, an update of the loss claim items relative to current market replacement values occurs. In this way, the insurance company always has an accurate and up-to-date inventory of the District’s buildings, property, and non-consumable materials and supplies. School Board Legal Liability While the District and its employees have a certain level of immunity for its actions and decisions, it maintains a Public School Board Legal Liability policy to provide coverage for the School Board and employees for such things as non-monetary claims, attorney fees, member vs. member claims, and breach of contract claims related to contracts with independent contractors. Treasure r’s Bond As required by law, the District maintains a Treasurer’s Bond of 25% of the amount of the budget and investments handled on an annual basis by the Treasurer. Additionally, bonds are maintained for the District employees who oversee daily operations of funds including the cafeteria manager, athletic assistant, assistant to the superintendent, and bookkeeper. Unemployment Compensation In addition to the insurance coverage purchased above, the District participates in the state unemployment compensation insurance program to provide a safety net for District employees from involuntary unemployment. The state bills the District for actual claims against the District, and the District maintains budgeted funds and individual unemployment accounts to pay those claims. Given specific experience with unemployment claims, the District has worked to revise its employment processes to avoid some claims. Legal Services The District has an in-house legal counsel and also contracts with various outside counsel for specialized legal services related to protecting and defending the District from liability from Constitutional and civil rights violations and suits.
